What to do if your toddler keeps kicking their duvet off in the night?

As a parent, it can be worrying if your baby or toddler kicks off their duvet during the night. This often happens with young children and can cause concern if they are not able to replace the cover independently.

Not only are you worried about their comfort, but you also want to make sure they stay warm throughout the night. In this blog, we will discuss some helpful tips and techniques to address this issue and ensure your little one stays cozy.

At what age can a child use a duvet?

Child under duvet

While a cozy duvet may seem like a comforting choice, it isn’t recommended for babies under 12 months. Even after this age, it’s important to choose a low-tog duvet , as young children have difficulty regulating their body temperature. Additionally, the duvet should be the right size to create a safe and snug sleep environment.

Beyond temperature concerns, duvets can pose other risks for young children. They may kick the duvet off and become cold , or worse, it could come up over their face during sleep. Another concern is that a duvet can aid climbing , making it easier for a child to step out of their cot . Some children bunch their duvet up, using it as leverage to climb, while having their legs free can make it easier to straddle over the cot sides.

A sleeping bag designed for the right age and room temperature is often a safer and more practical alternative. Unlike a duvet, a sleep bag stays securely in place, won’t cover a child’s face, and reduces the risk of climbing. With different tog ratings, it can be tailored to the child’s environment, helping to keep them neither too hot nor too cold.

Love to Dream offers a range of sleeping bags for babies and toddlers (0–3 years) , with options for different seasons and room temperatures . From newborn to toddler, it’s the perfect solution for families looking to ensure a safe and restful night’s sleep!

What if my child does not like a sleeping bag?

Whilst many children enjoy the comfort of a sleeping bag and the way it keeps their sleep from being disrupted by kicking off a duvet, others may not like having their feet enclosed, finding it restrictive.

Love to Dream accommodates these children with the Love to Dream Sleep Suit , a versatile ‘all-in-one’ wearable blanket with legs. This helps keep your little one warm while also providing freedom of movement, as their legs aren’t confined to a traditional sleep sack. The perfect solution— keeping your child both safe and comfortable right up to age 4.

If your toddler frequently kicks off their duvet but dislikes a traditional sleeping bag, a wearable Sleep Suit could be a great alternative. Not only does it help keep them warm and prevent sleep disruptions for both parent and child (since there’s no need to constantly replace the duvet), but it also offers a safer option . The design keeps the child’s face free of loose material while reducing the risk of it being used as leverage for climbing.
